5 Simple Wellness Anchors for Busy Seasons

It is 7:30 in the morning. You've already answered a message from your daughter, thought about what your parent needs today, and started a mental list of errands. Your coffee is getting cold, and you have not asked yourself one question: What do I need?

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. When you care for other people, your own needs can slide to the bottom of the list. Then a busy week becomes a busy month, and you tell yourself you will focus on wellness when life settles down.

But real life wellness cannot depend on an empty calendar. It needs a few simple anchors you can return to, even when the day does not go as planned.

What Is a Wellness Anchor?

A wellness anchor is a small action tied to something you already do. It is not a strict schedule or another standard to meet. It is a way to pause, notice what you need, and care for yourself with intention.

My WAFFLES™ Wellness Framework looks at water, air and breath, food, fitness and movement, love, emotional wellness, and sleep and stress management. You do not have to tackle every area at once. Start with one of these five anchors and grow from there.

1. Drink Water Before the Day Takes Off

Before you reach for your phone or head out the door, pour a glass of water. Keep it beside your bed or near the place where you make breakfast. Let that first glass be a quiet reminder: I am worth caring for, too.

If mornings are hectic, connect water to another part of your day. Drink a glass when you take your first break or sit down for lunch. The goal is not perfection. It is making it easier to remember yourself.

2. Pause and Take a Few Comfortable Breaths

A full day can leave you moving from one responsibility to the next without a moment to check in. Before you answer the next call or walk into the next room, pause. Take a few slow, comfortable breaths and notice how you feel.

You do not need special equipment or a long stretch of quiet. Try this while waiting for water to boil or sitting in your parked car. You might ask, What am I carrying right now? Is there one thing I can set down?

That brief pause can help you respond to the moment instead of rushing past it.

3. Make One Nourishing Food Choice Easier

Busy seasons are not the time to demand an entirely new way of eating from yourself. Instead, make one nourishing choice more convenient. Wash fruit when you bring it home. Keep ingredients for a simple meal where you can see them. Pack a snack before a day of errands.

Think about the meal that tends to be hardest for you. What small bit of preparation would make it easier this week? A little planning can give you an option when you are tired and do not want to make another decision.

4. Add Movement to Something You Already Do

Movement does not have to mean a full workout. Walk around the block after lunch. Stand and stretch after a long phone call. Put on a favorite song while you tidy the kitchen.

Choose movement that fits your body and your season of life. If you are managing pain, a health condition, or a new symptom, talk with a member of your healthcare team about what is appropriate for you. Becoming the CEO of your health includes asking questions and making informed choices with your care team.

Even on a crowded day, you can ask, Where might a few minutes of movement fit naturally?

5. Create an Evening Moment of Care

At the end of the day, it is tempting to replay everything you did not finish. Try closing the day differently. Set aside a few minutes to put down your phone, pray, write a sentence in a journal, or sit quietly. You might name one thing that was difficult and one thing you are grateful for.

This is not about forcing yourself to feel peaceful. Grief, caregiving, and change can be heavy. Emotional wellness includes being honest about what you are experiencing and reaching out for support when you need it.

If exhaustion, changes in sleep, or other symptoms continue or concern you, reach out to someone on your wellness support team  rather than assuming they are just part of getting older.

Choose One Anchor for This Week

You do not need to begin all five tomorrow. Choose the anchor that feels most doable and connect it to a moment already in your day. Practice it for a week. If you miss a day, begin again at the next opportunity.

That is what I mean by start small and grow. Caring for the body God has entrusted to you is not an all-or-nothing project. It is a series of thoughtful choices, made in the middle of real life.

Before you go, I want to leave you with something you can make in just a few minutes. If you choose the breathing anchor this week, this little inhaler can be a gentle cue to pause and take those slow, comfortable breaths. Tuck it in your purse, your car, or your nightstand, and let its familiar aroma remind you to check in with yourself.

This Week’s DIY: Seasonal Aromatic Inhaler

Ingredients: 3 drops Seasonal Essentials, 3 drops Thieves, 3 drops Peppermint, 5 drops Lavender, and an essential oil inhaler tube with a cotton wick.

Directions: Remove the cap and cotton wick from the inhaler. Add the essential oils to the wick, place it back inside the tube, and replace the cap. Let it sit for a few minutes.

To use, close one nostril, hold the inhaler near the other nostril, and breathe in gently. Repeat on the other side. Enjoy!
